Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is one of the most prominent anti-transgender advocates in the country, and she spoke in front of the Supreme Court yesterday as oral arguments in the challenge to Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care were being heard. Melissa Quinn - Washington — The Supreme Court on Wednesday appeared sympathetic to Tennessee's efforts to restrict access to gender-affirming care for minors experiencing gender dysphoria, as the justices stepped into the politically charged debate over health care for transgender youth. Twenty-four states have passed laws similar to Tennessee's, which prohibits puberty blockers or hormone therapy for those under the age of 18. The dispute brought by the Biden administration, three families and a doctor tests whether states cross a constitutional line when regulating medical care that transgender adolescents argue is crucial to their well-being. Ann E. Marimow - The justices were reviewing a Tennessee law that prohibits young people from using hormones and puberty blockers for gender transition. It is one of the most-watched cases of the term, coming at a time when a growing number of young people are identifying as transgender — though only a small fraction participate in the medical treatments — and after a presidential campaign that highlighted the polarizing issue. Whatever the court decides will affect the law in Tennessee and the 23 other states that have banned similar treatments in recent years. Blog image credit: (Marvin Joseph/The Washington Post).

Caroline Mimbs Nyce - This is unfortunate, in part because plenty of research shows that adults could benefit from playing music. Doing so is neuroprotective. “It helps you build up larger brain networks and new pathways,” Daniel Levitin, the author of the recent book I Heard There Was a Secret Chord: Music as Medicine, told me. You build these pathways by listening to music, he told me, but physically playing an instrument strengthens motor pathways as well: “You’re building up a lot of brain capacity.” Musicians tend to have better attention than nonmusicians. Lidey Heuck - While there’s nothing wrong with a pan of classic cornbread, this recipe makes for a fun twist when the occasion calls for something a little bit more festive. Maya-Camille Broussard - When handled correctly, an all-butter pie crust can achieve the same flakiness as any dough infused with lard or a shot of vodka. While you can make it in a stand mixer or food processor, using your hands is the best way to make sure the butter does not get overworked in the flour. Extremely cold chunks of butter and ice water deliver maximum flavor and optimal texture, two key foundational elements to an amazing pie. Eric Kim - This deeply savory, buttery sage stuffing builds layers of flavor with each step. First, whole sage leaves fry in melted butter for a pretty garnish that offers pleasurable crispy bits. The butter ends up browned, nutty and infused with the herb’s woodsy aroma, and helps chopped sage, fennel seeds, poultry seasoning and cayenne bloom for a fragrant blend that tastes like sausage. Milk in place of watery boxed stock means there’s a base of richness that only dairy can provide. The combination of white bread and cornbread results in a classic but amped-up Thanksgiving stuffing with textural integrity and a hint of sweetness to boot. Melissa Clark - For all the attention we lavish on Thanksgiving turkeys, the truth is more work does not necessarily yield a better bird. That's right: You can skip brining, stuffing, trussing and basting. Instead of a messy wet brine, use a dry rub (well, technically a dry brine) — a salt and pepper massage that locks in moisture and seasons the flesh. No stuffing or trussing allows the bird to cook more quickly, with the white and dark meat finishing closer to the same time. And if you oil but don’t baste your turkey, you’ll get crisp skin without constantly opening the oven. Blog image credit: David Malosh for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Simon Andrews.

Carrie Allan - Too many boozy Halloween punches get the blood-red color right but taste like something served in a frat house, but this deep red concoction is a nice treat, allowing you to play with the ghoulish theme of the holiday, if you want to. (It’ll taste just as good any time of year.) If you want creepy ice cube garnishes, remember to freeze those the night before. The on-stage outfits of the singer and songwriter who died in November 2022 may have often been somewhat upstaged by Stevie Nicks’ big boho capes, Mick Fleetwood’s top hats, and even (depending on the era) Lindsey Buckingham’s curly hair. However, McVie’s sharp signature style, everywoman appeal and great taste is expected to attract attention from a wider range of women than many auctions of a similar ilk. Claire Saffitz - Fudge can be fickle, easily becoming grainy and hard if it’s beaten too much or if the sugar mixture crystallizes, the result of undissolved sugar crystals. Try to make fudge in a cool environment that is not humid, and, if the final texture isn’t quite what you desire, know that cooking the fudge at a temperature that’s a few degrees lower the next time will result in a softer fudge, while a few degrees higher will make it firmer. Fudge also dries out easily, so make sure it’s well wrapped. Blog image credit: Linda Xiao for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Brett Regot.

While molasses-covered popcorn was already popular in the Northeast, the creation of Cracker Jack’s special formula is credited to German brothers Frederick William and Louis Rueckheim. Samantha Seneviratne - The bourbon ball was created in 1938 by Ruth Hanly Booe, a former Kentucky school teacher turned candy maker. The creamy original was whisky-spiked, covered with chocolate and topped with a pecan. Modern-day versions, like this one, are simpler to put together: Vanilla wafers, toasted pecans, cocoa powder, confectioners' sugar and bourbon are combined in a food processor, rolled into balls and dunked in melted chocolate or rolled in confectioners' sugar. Samantha Seneviratne - Depending on where you live, these chocolate and peanut-butter confections are known as either peanut butter balls or buckeyes. In the Midwest, they are known as buckeyes because they look like the nut of a buckeye tree, thanks to an exposed circle of peanut butter that's left after they're dipped in chocolate. Be sure to start with a good-quality peanut butter, and don’t skimp on the salt. Those small touches carry a lot of impact. Blog image credit: Jim Wilson/The New York Times.

Julia Moskin - “All candy-making is about preventing crystallization,” said Michael Chu, an engineer based in Austin, Tex., who writes about his kitchen experiments online at Cooking for Engineers. Mr. Chu’s chocolate fudge recipe, of which this is an adaptation, has the pleasantly cakey, almost sandy texture desirable in fudge, which can be tricky to achieve using milk and butter. He uses condensed milk to reduce the ingredients in the fudge to a mere three (salt is optional), and to eliminate the dreaded step of cooking the sugar syrup to the soft-ball stage. “The manufacturing process has already done that work for you,” he said. Dan Maloney - "Model rocketry has always taken cues from what’s happening in the world of full-scale rockets, with amateur rocketeers doing their best to incorporate the technologies and methods into their creations. That’s not always an easy proposition, though, as this three-year effort to nail a SpaceX-style vertical landing aptly shows."

Scott Loitsch - "These classic treats are salty-sweet and the perfect balance of crispy, gooey, soft and chewy. This version, inspired by the one Julia Moskin adapted from the chef Colin Alevras for The Times in 2007, is also enhanced by deeply browned butter. But here, a good amount of salt balances out the sweetness and includes a secret to achieving the perfect texture: the marshmallows are cooked gently to prevent the sugars from caramelizing, which can turn your treats hard and dry. You can easily double this recipe, and use a 9-by-13 pan, but you’ll end up with slightly taller treats (which is not a bad thing). The rainbow sprinkles are optional, but highly recommended." At the start of a jam session, Bisma (played by Faith Omole) tells her Lady Parts bandmates about a recent argument with Imani (Edesiri Okepnerho), who was suspended for throwing eggs at a teacher over the history of slavery being removed from her curriculum—and who likened this action to Malala Yousafzai’s fight for girls’ education. Lidey Heuck - "While diner-style Greek salads made with chopped romaine, crumbled feta and often grilled chicken have become ubiquitous in American restaurants, a traditional Greek salad, or horiatiki salata, is a simpler affair. An assembled salad of large-diced vegetables with Kalamata olives and sometimes capers, this salad has no greens at all, and the feta is served sliced on top of the salad rather than crumbled and tossed into it. A traditional Greek salad dressing usually consists of olive oil and red wine vinegar; this recipe adds garlic and oregano. To make the salad into a satisfying vegetarian main course, throw in a can of drained and rinsed chickpeas." Blog image credit: Yossy Arefi for The New York Times (Photography and Styling).

Millie Peartree - "This Southern staple is the kind of cake that’s always on the table, ready to greet anyone who comes over. Good enough for dessert, it’s also not supersweet, so you could have it for breakfast with coffee or tea, or at any time of day. Made with canned pineapple and maraschino cherries (which can stay in the cupboard for a long time), it’s a delicious and beautiful cake that’s also budget friendly. The caramel finish is simple to put together, and the base is light and moist, but strong enough to hold up that joyful topping. If you don’t want to use whole milk, you could use an equal amount of the reserved pineapple juice. The end result will be slightly sweeter, but that’s not a bad thing." Kim Severson - "This delicious cobbler, which features pie crust instead of a biscuit or cake topping, is designed to let the incandescent flavor of summer peaches shine, and it’s best made when they are in season. Edna Lewis, the cookbook author and chef from Virginia whose books are considered definitive in the Southern culinary canon, often suggested a lattice top for it, with bits of raw dough tucked into the filling before baking. Those bits cook into tender dumplings while thickening the fruit juice. Serve the result warm with ice cream or whipped cream, or all by itself. The Atlantic - "For the past week, sites in the United Kingdom and France have been hosting a number of events leading up to today, the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944. Veterans, families, dignitaries, and visitors have gathered at former battlefields and cemeteries to commemorate the Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy, which turned the tide in World War II and led to the liberation of occupied France and the defeat of Nazi Germany. Gathered here are images of some of these events, and of some of the few remaining veterans who took part in that costly invasion eight decades ago."

Ali Slagle - "Saucy and savory with just ground beef, beans and cheese, this easy recipe is inspired by Los Angeles-style burritos, which restaurant critic Jonathan Gold once summarized as “the rough equivalent of a hardhat’s lunch pail, a method of constructing a filling, portable meal from a tortilla, last night’s beans and a spoonful of stew if there was one.” This burrito’s filling eschews guacamole, sour cream, rice and raw vegetables which means it freezes well for up to 3 months. The seared ground beef is simply spiced, but feel free to swap in a stewed meat like birria or tinga de pollo or make it vegetarian with just beans and cheese." Emily Weinstein - "This is not really a New York cheesecake recipe — there’s no lemon (although there could be) — this is an all-American cheesecake of the big, beautiful, lush and creamy variety, the kind that causes gasps of delight when you bring it to the table and sighs of satisfaction when you and your guests savor bite after bite. The cake’s velvety texture is a result of a long turn in the mixer, and a cool-down process that requires patience, but not much effort. It’s also a cheesecake you can customize. You can make the cake milder or tangier by using all heavy cream or all sour cream, or a combination of the two. You can add fruits or nuts, swirls of chocolate or drops of extract." Kim Severson - "You might need to ask your butcher (assuming you have one) or even a store meat manager to order in a tri-tip roast. Two pounds is a good size, but if you come across a larger one, by all means grab it as the extra meat makes amazing sandwiches. The trick is to carve the tri-tip against the grain, which can change directions in this cut. So before you rub it and roast it, take a look at the raw meat and see which direction the long strands of muscle fiber are running on each part of the roast. After the roast has been cooked, and it has rested for 15 minutes or so, slice the roast in two at the place where the fibers change direction. Carve each piece separately." From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Vertigo is a 1958 American psychological thriller film directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock. The story was based on the 1954 novel D'entre les morts (From Among the Dead) by Boileau-Narcejac. The screenplay was written by Alec Coppel and Samuel A. Taylor. The film stars James Stewart as former police detective John "Scottie" Ferguson, who has retired because an incident in the line of duty has caused him to develop acrophobia (an extreme fear of heights) accompanied by vertigo, a false sense of rotational movement. Scottie is hired by an acquaintance, Gavin Elster, as a private investigator to follow Gavin's wife, Madeleine (Kim Novak), who is behaving strangely." Blog image credit: Wikipedia.

Genevieve Ko - "This quick batter cooks into the most tender pancakes for the most comforting breakfast. Milky ricotta and butter, along with tangy buttermilk, lend a soft, sweet creaminess, and well-beaten eggs keep them fluffy and light. Lemon- and vanilla-scented sugar makes the pancakes sweet enough to eat on their own, but they’re fun to serve with blueberry syrup or your favorite toppings." If you’re not from Alabama, mayonnaise may sound like a strange ingredient for a barbecue sauce, but its creamy piquancy goes great with smoked chicken, pulled pork and roast beef. After assuring me that he was, in fact, not “tripping balls,” one of the men, who’d spent most of the second set alternating between staring agog at the building’s roof and yelling “YESSSSSSS” to nobody in particular, exclaimed, “This was like the first time again.” Blog image credit: Phish performs at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Genevieve Ko, "With their signature crossed tops, these lightly spiced hot cross buns are a delicious symbol of the Easter season. Stories of their origin stretch back to ancient Greece and Egypt, and they’re now best known as an English bun, forbidden during the reign of Elizabeth I except on Good Friday, Christmas and at burials. In the 18th century, a passage in Poor Robin’s Almanack refers to “one or two a penny hot cross buns,” which has evolved into well-known rhymes and songs. Some buns have a sugary icing cross. This version showcases a chewier bread with a dough cross baked right in, so you can — and should — eat them hot."

Frozen hash browns provide great texture in this simple version, but feel free to use leftover cooked potatoes, diced into ½-inch pieces, in their place. Fry up a pound of bacon or use ½ pound of cubed ham instead of the Italian sausage, and experiment with different shredded cheeses. Made as written, or with your own additions, this casserole is a dependable and delicious breakfast standby."

So many good points in this article by Ian Bogost, adding this quote from the article as description, "Left entirely to themselves, computer scientists can forget that computers are supposed to be tools that help people. Georgia Tech’s College of Computing worked “because the culture was always outward-looking. We sought to use computing to solve others’ problems,” Guzdial said. But that may have been a momentary success. Now, at Michigan, he is trying to rebuild computing education from scratch, for students in fields such as French and sociology. He wants them to understand it as a means of self-expression or achieving justice—and not just a way of making software, or money."
